There have been many changes in the village since the railway come to Holt. New people have moved into the area to build and run the railway. This has brought opportunities for employment for local people and improved prospects for the new generation growing up in the village. It has brought with it the prospects of travel and increased trade that will affect everyone’s lives. But it does not meet with everyone’s approval.
The children will interact and work with a range of local characters from various social classes connected with the railway. This could be anyone from the local landowner to the lowest paid railway worker. Undoubtedly they will also meet other members of this rural community and find out how the railway has affected them.
As a reward for their morning’s work they will have an outing to Sheringham by train! They will share their journey with other Victorian travellers who will no doubt voice their opinions on the recent changes.
At Sheringham they will be restored to the 21st century. But before returning to Holt, your pupils will be given the chance to consider the impact of the railways on the local area. Supporters or objectors – which way will they vote?
Free preliminary visit by a member of staff recommended.
