The Evacuees workshop in action

What was it like for children in the Second World War?

You and your children will be asked to take on the role of a school being evacuated from London to Norfolk in 1940.

Your day will include

  • Travel on a steam train
  • Your own billeting officer
  • An air raid
  • Air Raid Precautions instruction
  • Making your own lunch using rations
  • Dig for victory
  • One of the following: singing, drill or games

For maximum educational reward and enjoyment we recommend that you take advantage of our suggestions for pre visit activities and lesson ideas on the 'The Evacuees' teachers resources page.

The day begins at Sheringham Station at 10am and finishes at Holt Railway Institute at 2pm. You will travel on the 10:30am steam train from Sheringham to Holt. You will not need to bring any food unless you have special dietary requirements.

Free preliminary visit by a member of staff recommended.
