Allow 30 minutes for this activity
Resources
- School Hall or large empty space
- Air raid siren recording or a whistle & a hand bell(3 short blasts for an air raid & a hand bell for all clear)
Part 1 - A Safe Position
Step 1.
When the air raid sounds find a space and kneel down
Step 2.
Bring both arms over the head covering ears
Step 3.
Bend forward until head touches floor
Part 2 - Taking Cover
- Everyone move around the whole room
- Sound the air raid alarm
- Everyone take cover. Are they still & quiet with their faces covered?
Part 3 - Air raid
- Mark an area of the room to represent an air raid shelter
- Sound the air raid alarm
- Everyone take cover in the shelter. Turn the lights out
- Talk about how it feels. What might be happening outside. Aeroplanes flying overhead. Theirs or ours? Anti aircraft guns, bombs whistling past, explosions, buildings collapsing, glass smashing, the smell of burning. Is their house still standing? Are their friends and family alright?
- Sound the all clear
- What would it be like to experience an air raid night after night?
